Uses : Valcyte (valganciclovir) is an antiviral medication used primarily to treat and prevent infections caused by cytomegalovirus (CMV). It is a prodrug of ganciclovir, meaning it converts into ganciclovir in the body, which is the active form of the medication. Uses: CMV Retinitis: Valcyte is used to treat cytomegalovirus retinitis, a viral infection of the retina in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). CMV Prophylaxis: It is also used to prevent CMV disease in high-risk solid organ transplant recipients, such as those receiving kidney, heart, or liver transplants. Mechanism of Action: Valganciclovir is converted into ganciclovir in the body. Ganciclovir inhibits the replication of CMV by interfering with the viral DNA polymerase, preventing the virus from multiplying and spreading.
